Where group tours win
Price. A shared Guatapé seat can move a lot of people efficiently because the vehicle, guide and road costs are spread across the group.
They can also be social, which some solo travelers prefer. If you enjoy a structured day and do not mind the schedule, there is nothing inherently wrong with shared.
Where private tours win
Pickup is simpler, the group is only yours, and you can change the balance between El Peñol, town, lake, food and optional stops.
Private is particularly useful when one traveler wants the rock and another does not, when kids or older relatives are involved, or when the group wants a slower meal instead of the bus timetable.
The misleading price comparison
Marketplace cards often show per-person 'from' pricing that changes with group size. A direct private product may show one group price instead. Compare the final total for your actual party, not the smallest number displayed in search.
For our current service, the 1–2 guest Guatapé day is $500 total and the 3–6 guest tier starts higher because it requires a larger vehicle.
Included versus optional
Shared tours often use inclusions to make the package feel complete. Private tours may keep tickets, meals and boats separate. Neither approach is automatically better.
The useful question is whether you would have bought those inclusions yourself. If not, a lower base with transparent extras can be cleaner.
The decision in one sentence
If you are asking 'what is the cheapest way to see Guatapé?', choose shared or DIY. If you are asking 'how do we make Guatapé easy for our group?', private is the better comparison set.

Bottom line
Choose the day that fits the people traveling, not the longest list of attractions. If you know your date and group size, we can turn the priorities above into a Route Card and confirm what actually fits.
