One caution first: we are not quoting visitor numbers or crowd percentages here, because we have no reliable figures. What follows is planning logic built on dates and schedules we could verify, plus how a private day is structured.
The dates that shape December
Three dates matter most for tour planning in 2026. The two public holidays are fixed dates, and the candle tradition falls the night before the first one.
| Date (2026) | What it is | Planning effect |
|---|---|---|
| Mon, December 7 | Día de las Velitas, the night families light candles | Neighborhoods are lively in the evening. Keep your own plans flexible. |
| Tue, December 8 | Public holiday (Inmaculada Concepción) | Attractions may run holiday schedules. Check hours. |
| Fri, December 25 | Public holiday (Navidad) | Expect changed hours and a quieter, more family-focused city. |
The Velitas tradition is a family and neighborhood one, with candles lit in houses, on sidewalks and on balconies. It is a good evening to watch from a viewpoint or a restaurant, and a poor one to try to fit in a tight schedule. The holiday dates come from a published 2026 calendar of Colombian holidays; confirm them against an official source if your plans depend on them.
What the Christmas lights add
The city's Alumbrados lights are a big draw. In 2025 they were on from November 28 to January 12, from 6 p.m. to midnight. If your December dates overlap with the lights, evenings around the river and the center can be busy, so the car matters more for the return. Our guide to planning a private evening around the lights goes through that evening in detail. The 2026 dates were not yet published in mid-October.
Which tour types hold up best
| Day type | December approach |
|---|---|
| City half day (4 hours) | The easiest to keep calm. Start early, finish by lunch, and leave the afternoon open. |
| Full city day (8 hours) | Works well on a weekday. On a holiday, check museum and attraction hours before you commit to the order of stops. |
| Coffee experience (5–6 hours) | Out of the city, so city-center crowding matters less. Confirm the farm is open on your date. |
| Guatapé (9–10 hours) | The one most affected by travel timing. Choose a weekday if you can, and leave early. See below. |
| Parque Arví on your own or with us | The park's own schedule lists Tuesday as a maintenance closure. December 8, 2026 is a Tuesday, so check before you plan it. |
Early starts and weekdays
Whatever you choose, the simplest crowd strategy is the same: begin early and put the stop that matters most at the front of the day. Popular places tend to be most comfortable at the start of the day, and your private clock does not depend on a bus departure. Our 4-hour itinerary guide explains why a few stops done well beat a long list.
A practical order for a holiday-period city day: the stop with limited capacity or the longest queue first, a long lunch in the middle when everyone else is also eating, and the flexible stop last. That last slot is where the Route Card helps, because you can drop or swap it without changing the booked time.
Weekday versus weekend
Where your dates allow it, put the busiest-sounding day on a weekday. This is especially true for Guatapé, which is already a long road day. Colombia's public holidays often turn a weekend into a longer one, so more people travel, and road days can feel the difference. We cannot give you traffic times, because they change, but you can build in margin: an early departure and a return plan that does not depend on being back by a hard deadline.
Our Guatapé guide explains why the day is 9–10 hours. In a busy period, that is a reason to protect the early start, not to compress the day further.
What to book early
- The vehicle for larger groups. Groups of 3–6 need a larger SUV or van, and as our last-minute guide notes, the larger vehicle can be the limiting factor for availability. A larger group should ask early.
- Guatapé and any long day. A road day needs a driver and host for many hours, so availability is tighter than for a city half day.
- Dinner reservations. If your evening matters, book the table first and build the tour around it.
- Anything with limited capacity. Check the attraction's own site for tickets or timed entry. We do not hold third-party tickets for you unless the booking confirmation says so.
Last-minute requests are still possible, but they are harder in a peak month. See our last-minute booking guide for how to send a request that gets a fast answer.
How a private day absorbs the chaos
A private day cannot make a crowded place empty. What it does is remove some of the extra friction: no waiting for other guests, no fixed bus clock, and the ability to move a stop to a better time. If a place is packed at ten, your host can suggest flipping the order rather than pushing through.
The base prices are the same in December as the rest of our public price list: the 4-hour city day is $250 for 1–2 guests, the 8-hour city day is $400, coffee starts at $300 and Guatapé at $500, with 3–6 guests from $325, $475, $375 and $575. Admissions, meals and optional extras are separate. If a holiday date carries any special term, it is disclosed before you pay, as our terms describe.
A simple December checklist
- Pick your priority stop and put it on a weekday morning.
- Check the attraction's holiday hours on its own official page.
- Ask for your vehicle early if you are traveling with 3–6 guests.
- Leave one unscheduled afternoon after any long day.
- Keep December 7 evening and December 25 flexible.
Bottom line
December rewards decisions made early. Choose the tour type that suits the date, start early, avoid stacking a holiday date with a long road day, and verify holiday hours with the venue itself. Then send us the date and group size and we will build the Route Card around it.
Frequently asked questions
Is December a bad time to visit Medellín?
No. It is a lively, popular time, with the Christmas lights and the Velitas tradition. It just rewards earlier booking and earlier starts than a quiet month.
Which December dates should I plan around?
In 2026, Monday December 7 is the night of the Velitas, Tuesday December 8 is a public holiday and Friday December 25 is a public holiday. Confirm the holidays against an official calendar.
Should I book a Guatapé day on a holiday?
If your dates are flexible, choose a weekday and leave early. If the holiday is your only option, it can still work, but give yourself margin and do not plan a tight return.
Do your prices change in December?
Our public price list does not show a December surcharge. If any holiday or special scheduling term applies to a booking, it is disclosed before payment and written into the booking confirmation.
How early should I ask about a date?
As early as you know it, especially for groups of 3–6 and for long days. A first message with date, group size, pickup area and time block lets us check the correct vehicle quickly.
Plan the private city day, or send the date and number of guests on WhatsApp.
