This list is for any private driver or driver-guide service in Medellín, ours included. Where it helps, we say how we answer, using only what is on our public pages. For the language side specifically, read our guide to choosing an English-speaking private guide.
Price and time
1. What is the final price for my group size, and what does it exclude?
Teaser "from" prices can change once you enter your date and party size. Ask for the total for your actual group, then ask what is not in it: admissions, meals, drinks, boat rides, tips, parking, tolls. Our model: prices are for the private group, not per person, and admissions, meals, boat rides, tips and optional extras are separate. Our pricing guide explains how to compare quotes.
2. How many hours am I buying, and what happens if we run over?
A "full day" can mean very different things. Ask for the start and end, whether the clock begins at pickup or at the first stop, and what overtime costs if you want to stay longer. Our time blocks are 4 hours, 8 hours, 5–6 hours for coffee and 9–10 hours for Guatapé. Any overtime or special scheduling terms are disclosed before payment and written into the confirmation. Our half-day vs. full-day guide helps you choose.
People and vehicle
3. Who drives, and who guides?
Some services are a driver who also talks. Others split the roles. Ask whether one person does both, and whether the person who guides is with you the whole day. A driver focused on traffic is a safety benefit, and a guide focused on you is a service benefit. Our model separates them: a professional transport partner drives, and an English-speaking host stays with you to handle the Route Card, timing and questions.
4. What vehicle will we get, and will it fit us and our bags?
Ask for the vehicle type and its seating, and whether luggage, a stroller or a child seat fits. Do not accept "a nice car." We match vehicle class to group size and availability rather than promising a model: one or two guests normally use a private car, and larger groups need a larger SUV or van. Our terms ask you to tell us in advance about child seats, mobility needs and luggage.
5. How good is the English, and who speaks it?
"English-speaking" covers everything from a greeting to full conversation. Ask who will speak with you, and whether that person can explain history, answer questions and read a menu with you. You can also ask for a short message exchange before booking to get a sense. If the driver does not speak English, make sure the person who does is with you all day. In our case the host is an American living in Medellín.
Route and extras
6. How flexible is the route, really?
Many "private" tours still follow a fixed list. Ask whether you can swap, skip or linger, and who decides when traffic, weather or closures interfere. Our Route Card is a menu, not a contract, and reasonable stop swaps inside the booked time are part of the service. See our notes on what "custom" should mean.
7. Which stops cost extra, and who pays at the door?
Entry tickets, boat rides and meals add up. Ask which stops have fees, roughly what they cost (or who confirms the number), and whether they are paid by you at the door or added to your bill. We mark likely extra-cost stops on the Route Card so you can decide before you arrive. For attractions with changing prices or hours, the institution controls the final price, so check the official information too.
Paperwork
8. What are the cancellation, rescheduling and deposit terms, in writing?
Ask this before you hand over money. You want to know what a deposit covers, what happens if you cancel or the weather turns, and what happens if the provider cancels. Our terms state that any cancellation, deposit, refund, overtime, holiday or special scheduling terms are disclosed before payment and become part of the booking confirmation, and that a form or message is an inquiry, not a confirmed reservation, until we explicitly accept the date.
9. What registrations and insurance cover the vehicle and the service?
This is the question people skip. Ask what licensing and insurance cover the vehicle and the driver for carrying paying passengers, and whether the provider is registered to offer tourism services in Colombia. Ask them to explain, and ask for documentation you can read. We have not verified the specific legal requirements for this article, so do not treat this list as legal advice. The point is the habit: a provider who has the paperwork can describe it simply.
How to use the answers
You are looking for the pattern, not a perfect score. Clear, specific, written answers on price, hours, roles and cancellation are the sign of a provider who runs a real service. Vague answers, pressure to pay at once, or a price that changes after you give the date are signs to slow down. Do not confuse urgency with pressure; our last-minute guide makes the same point.
If you want a cheaper driver-only service, that can be exactly right when transport is the only problem. A hosted day costs more because it includes planning, context and pacing. Questions 3, 5 and 6 tell you which one you are buying.
Ask these nine questions of us
We are happy to answer them. Send us the date, group size, pickup area and anything you definitely want to see, and we will answer in writing on WhatsApp. If you are building a longer trip, our first-time visitor route is a good place to start.
Bottom line
Choose the provider whose answers to these nine questions are specific and in writing. The price matters, but the structure of the day matters more.
Frequently asked questions
Should I hire a driver or a driver-guide?
A driver alone can be exactly right if transport is the only problem. A hosted day costs more because it includes planning, context and pacing. Questions 3, 5 and 6 in the list help you decide.
Is the quoted price per person?
Ask. Some operators quote per person and others quote a group or vehicle price. Our public prices are for the private group in the stated size range, not per person.
Can the route change on the day?
It should be able to. Ask who decides when traffic, weather or closures interfere. With us, reasonable stop swaps inside the booked time are part of the service.
What should I get in writing?
The final group price, the hours, what is excluded, the vehicle type, the pickup details and the cancellation, deposit and overtime terms.
Is it safe to book on WhatsApp?
Many local services use WhatsApp for questions and confirmations. Whatever the channel, get the price, hours and terms in writing and confirm the provider's details before paying.
Plan the private city day, or send the date and number of guests on WhatsApp.
