What the Alumbrados are
Alumbrados is the name for Medellín's Christmas light displays, run by the utility company EPM. Going by the 2025 season as the most recent reference, the lights were switched on at a ceremony at Parques del Río on November 28 and stayed on until January 12. Press coverage described roughly 61 lit points across the city, with the heaviest concentration along the river.
The river corridor is the part most visitors mean when they say "the lights." In 2025 it was described as a route of about 1.5 kilometers between the Puente de Guayaquil and Parques del Río, split into themed sections, with a large dome that showed short projection shows at set times. You can walk it in either direction.
Beyond the river, the 2025 displays also reached Parque de Bolívar in the center, Avenida Oriental and La Playa, parks in all 16 comunas, several of the surrounding rural districts, and landmarks such as Pueblito Paisa. That spread is what makes a driver useful: the best second stop is rarely within walking distance of the first.
What to confirm for 2026
We could not find published 2026 dates when we wrote this in mid-October, so treat everything above as last year's pattern, not a promise. Before you build the evening around a specific night, check EPM's official channels or the city's tourism pages for:
- The switch-on date and the last night the lights stay on.
- Nightly hours. In 2025 coverage the window was given as 6 p.m. to midnight.
- Any road closures or pedestrian-only sections along the river.
- The times of the dome shows, if a show matters to you.
If your trip falls before the switch-on, the lights are simply not part of that visit. If it falls well into December, read our guide to planning tour days around holiday crowds as well.
A private evening, in order
The point of a private block is to avoid doing everything. This is a sequence that tends to work, not a fixed timetable. Your host will adjust it around your pickup time, weather and how busy the river is.
| Stage | What happens | Why in this order |
|---|---|---|
| Pickup | Car collects you in your area and heads for the river end you prefer. | You arrive fresh instead of hunting for a taxi near a crowded display. |
| First stop | The river corridor on foot, in the direction your host recommends on the night. | It is the main event, and you see it with the most energy. |
| Pause | A snack or a sit-down. Street vendors along the 2025 route sold traditional sweets and drinks. | Breaks stop the walk from feeling like a march. |
| Second stop | A short drive to the center (Parque de Bolívar, La Playa) or to a lit neighborhood park. | Variety without another long walk. |
| Drop-off | Back to your door, or to a dinner reservation. | No late-night transport search. |
Where the car earns its place
The river corridor is the one stretch that is better on foot. Everything else benefits from a vehicle waiting nearby.
- One-way walks. Because the river route can be walked in either direction, ask whether the car can drop you at one end and meet you at the other. That saves you a doubled-back walk.
- Skipping the weak stops. With 61 points spread across a large city, most visitors only want the few that suit them. A host who knows the layout can tell you which neighborhood displays are worth the detour.
- Tired legs and mixed groups. If someone in your group walks slowly, the car lets them skip a section. Our guide to low-walking private days covers how to say what you need.
- Staying out of the rain. December evenings can be wet. A car turns a passing shower into a short wait. See our rainy-day itinerary notes for the habit of building in a swap.
Pickup, drop-off and timing
Standard pickup is included in El Poblado, Laureles and Envigado. For other areas, send the address and we confirm any additional transport charge before you book. Our pickup guide explains what your area changes.
Our public time blocks are 4 hours and 8 hours. For an evening, the 4-hour block is the natural fit: it covers pickup, the river walk, one more stop and the return, without a marathon. Tell us the start time you want when you ask for availability, since the evening start is a request we confirm rather than a fixed product. If you have a dinner reservation, give us the time up front so the order of stops can be built backward from it.
What it costs
The 4-hour Medellín half day is $250 for 1–2 guests, and 3–6 guests start from $325 because a larger SUV or van is needed. That is the group price, not a per-person price. The theme does not change the base price inside the same time block, so choosing lights instead of museums does not cost extra.
Food and drinks along the route, any paid extras and tips are separate. We flag likely extra-cost stops on the Route Card so you can decide in advance.
Making it a lighter or longer night
If you want the lights plus a full afternoon, the 8-hour block is $400 for 1–2 guests, or from $475 for 3–6, and it can include a daytime stop before the evening. Be realistic about stamina, though. A day that starts at breakfast and ends at the river after dark is long, and our half-day vs. full-day guide can help you choose. Many people are happier with a quiet afternoon and a focused 4-hour evening.
Bottom line
Plan the lights as a short, well-ordered evening: the river on foot, one more stop by car, and a clean return. Confirm the 2026 dates and hours with official sources, then send us your date, group size, pickup area and preferred start time and we will turn it into a Route Card.
Frequently asked questions
When do the Alumbrados start?
The 2026 dates were not published when we checked in October 2026. In 2025 the lights were switched on on November 28 and stayed on until January 12, so a late-November start is a reasonable expectation, but confirm with EPM or the city before you book.
What hours are the lights on?
Coverage of the 2025 season gave the nightly window as 6 p.m. to midnight. Hours can change from year to year, so check the current official information.
Is the river walk hard for older travelers?
The river display was described as a route of about 1.5 kilometers, and you can walk any part of it. A private car lets you walk a section and skip the rest. Tell us about mobility needs when you request your date.
Do I need a ticket for the lights?
The 2025 coverage we read did not mention a ticket for the river corridor, and the dome projection show was described as free. We have not verified 2026 arrangements, so check the official channels before the day.
Can I combine the lights with dinner?
Yes. Give us the reservation time when you ask for availability and we will build the order of stops around it, including the drop-off.
Plan the private city day, or send the date, group size and start time on WhatsApp.
